Ask the Care Manager . . .
By: Darla Heivly, Senior Solutions
Q: I’ve heard that thousands of Americans fall at home. How can I prevent a fall for myself or a loved one?
A: Over 1.5 million people are treated in Emergency Departments annually due to falls. While there are many reasons for falls, they are often due to hazards that are easy to overlook but simple to fix. Reduce your risk for falls by checking the following areas of your home:
Floors:
- Move furniture to create a clear path
- Remove throw rugs or use double-sided tape or a non slip backing
- Keep objects off the floor (magazines, catalogs, books, shoes)
- Coil wires and cords next to the wall to prevent tripping
Stairs:
- Keep objects off stairs.
- Fix uneven steps.
- Install lights in stairway with switches at the top and the bottom
- Make certain carpet is firmly attached
- If uncarpeted, attach non slip rubber treads
- Install handrails on both sides of stairs that cover the full length of the steps Paint a contrasting color on the top edge of all steps
Bathroom:
- Use nonstick rubber mat or self stick strips on floor of tub or shower
- If unsteady, use a shower seat or bench
- Install grab bars inside the tub or next to the toilet
Bedroom:
- Keep a lamp within easy reach of the bed
- Place a nightlight between the bedroom and bathroom as well as in the bathroom
Kitchen and closets:
- Keep frequently used items on lower shelves
- Never use a chair as a step stool
- Invest in a grasping device that will allow you to reach safely for light items on higher shelves
All rooms:
- Make certain all areas are adequately lighted
- Walk in shoes not barefoot or in slippers
Outside:
- Repair cracked sidewalks
- Smooth out uneven surfaces
